Gary Snyder Interview - part 1

  1. Gary Snyder is very educated about ecology and the destruction of nature. He believes that the "biosphere is one organism," so if one thing goes wrong it effects everyone else. I would describe Snyder as a Modernist writer because a quality of modernism is industrialization and the consequent displacement of persons. He seems to fully express his scientific ideas through his work and by reading other people's poetry.

  2. Lindsay sums up Snyder pretty well. He seems like a pretty cool guy. What I found very interesting was the concept that the "biosphere is one organism." It causes one to re-evaluate their concept of the world. Instead of the world being a multitude of thronging life, maybe it is a single living, breathing life-force with a pulse, and we are all just components of this single organism. Therefore, our actions have a direct effect, however small, on the rest of the organism.

  3. THE MAN IS DEEP!!!

It's pretty obvious that Synder is a thinking man with much to say. Much can be learned from a man like him. I now understand why Tom's in love with this guy.

  4. Snyder's strong beliefs in nature and ecology are definitely his own, yet it is easy to conclude that his ideas and values are adjusted by what he learns from others and how others ideas and beliefs help to justify his own, as well as adjust his own. Although some of his beliefs remain consistent, he is very open to the judgements of others and is very observant to the way others look at things.

  5. Gary Snyder is clearly an intelligent being. I envy his awareness of his world and our world in nature. His ideas are very simplistic, but very hard to comprehend.

  6. He explains that his poetry involves the political, social, environmental, etc. "issues that come right in front of you." In the first poem he does just this by bringing to light the everyday issue of unemployment and poverty that comes as a result. I completely concur with William on the idea of the biosphere being "one organism."

  7. Gary Snyder is an erudite man with a great knowledge in many aspects. By saying “biosphere is one organism”, he highlights that the world is interconnected in various ways. I think he is a cool guy.

  8. Snyeder says that he doesnt compete with other poets of his time, he wants to use them as touch stones. I think this explains why often writers of a time period try to get a similar message to their readers compared to other authors of their time. The video stopped working after a couple of minutes so I can only say that. sorry ;-)

  10. Snyder mentions the Human Be-In (San Francisco, January 1967) at the end of this clip. If you are interested in learning more about this, look it up!

  11. its interesting that when he is reading about the doe, he moves the pitch of his voice around, almost in a song-like manner. when we touched on peoples relationships with their parents, about how the paths they take are either nearly the same or nearly the opposite. he came from a logging family, and is now heavily involved with ecology.

  12. The west coast where he was raised made him to be really passionate in ecology and environment. He is also passionate with poetry. Therefore, throughout poetry, he tries to express his ecological idea.

  13. I agree with the earlier posts that the concept of biosphere being one large organism is mind-numbing. For most people a rock is a rock, nothing more, but in reality that rock is part of a larger being then itself. Snyder seems to have a deep understanding of nature that is lost to most of society. The poem about the logging trucks passing by with " the world that is being carried away" really struck a chord with me.

  14. I think that it is really interesting that he writes ecological and enviormentally aware poetry because it is not something that most people associate with poetry. Like Connor said, Snyder is more aware of and understands nature better than most people. He sees the issues that are right infront of him and shares them through his poetry.

  15. I feel that Gary is very objective in his approach toward poetry. and Is a eco man, very friendly with the world. A nature person. person of nature. Brings the earth into his poetry because of his almost love for nature.nature man, a person whom knows himself. I like him :)

  16. I think that Snyder is a very intelligent man. At the beginning he talks about "paying regard to the issues that come right in front of you". This shows that Snyder sees reality and it explains why much of his poetry is written about the environment and ecology. I really like the concept that "the biosphere is in a sense one living organism," explaining how everything is connected.

  17. I am amazed at Snyder's openness to the world around him. Many great artists will lose touch with reality in order to be better in touch with their art. Some artists are too literal and real to be artistic, but Snyder is both young and old in that he strides to be a good poet in the present day, but he has his roots, his inspiration from the great poets of past centuries.

  18. Gary Snyder as a poet is a modest one. He doesn't believe he is better than the poets of his time. As a man who is very in tune with the issues around ecology, he finds solace in nature and uses it as motivation for his poems. His idea as others have said of “Biosphere is one organism” he believes that everything is interconnected in some way or another.

  19. So, The Gaia Hypothesis is generally regarded as a bunch of nonsense is the scientific community. It's more than simply saying that we're all one, it stated that the Earth is a super organism and that the creatures on it were involved in self-dictating evolution; meaning they intentionally evolved. It's kind of an interesting concept, and of course it's all interrelated, but the Gaia Hypothesis in my opinion is taking things way to far; it has no scientific evidence. I just thought that would be an interesting addition.

He appears to know what he's talking about though. I think he has a good grip on reality.
